Information arrives digitally in rapid succession—notifications, pop-ups, chat messages. One might assume our brains process every input simultaneously. However, users often overlook important information even when looking directly at it. They report not having seen warnings that were clearly displayed on the screen. The question is: How long does our attentional system need to recover? Which time windows are critical—and what does the evidence tell us?

The RSVP Experiment by Raymond, Shapiro & Arnell

Jane Raymond and her colleagues developed the foundational paradigm for Attentional Blink in 1992. They presented participants with a rapid sequence of letters—one every 100 milliseconds, or 10 letters per second. Embedded within this sequence were two targets: a white letter (T1) among numerous black letters, followed shortly by an X (T2). The task was to identify both targets. The surprising result: when the X appeared 200-500ms after the white letter, participants completely missed it in 50-80% of trials—despite staring directly at the screen and the letter being clearly visible. When the X appeared 500ms or later, the detection rate rose to over 90%. The brain exhibited a measurable "blindness period" following each detected stimulus.

The Two-Phase Model of Chun & Potter

Marvin Chun and Mary Potter tested in 1995 whether information during the attentional blink truly disappears or is simply harder to retrieve. They presented participants with the same rapid letter sequence but varied the timing of when participants should respond. When required to answer immediately after the sequence, the classic attentional blink occurred. When allowed to wait one second before responding, performance improved slightly—but not completely. The crucial experiment involved showing a cue after the second target—a prompt that directed attention to the missed target. Even with this cue, only 10% of the "blinked" targets could be retrieved. The conclusion: Information within the blink window is not merely poorly stored; it never reaches conscious awareness in the first place. The second target is indeed perceived but not consolidated—it vanishes before entering memory.

Principle

Which principle for Customer Experience Design can be derived from this? The principle of conscious timing states that critical information must never be presented in rapid succession—there must be at least a 500-millisecond pause between important messages. This neurological time window is particularly relevant for digital interfaces, advertisements, and presentations, where companies often attempt to convey as much information as possible in a short time. The effect intensifies under stress or cognitive overload, making it especially problematic during critical moments of the customer journey—such as the checkout process or important decision points. Conversely, strategically placed pauses can direct attention and ensure that each important piece of information is actually perceived. The following guidelines demonstrate how to implement this principle in practice.

Guidelines

Minimum distance for important messages

When two pieces of important information must be presented—such as an error warning followed by an action instruction—allow at least 600ms between them. Ideally, wait 1 second. Display the warning first, pause, then show the solution. This is particularly critical for error messages, security notices, and purchase confirmations. In multi-step validation, present errors sequentially rather than all at once.

Notifications sequentially instead of in parallel

Do not stack notifications in rapid succession. When the system has multiple messages (such as chat alerts, system updates, or offers), display them with temporal spacing. Implement a queue with at least one second between pop-ups. This applies especially to toast notifications, banners, and modal dialogs. Alternatively, consolidate multiple updates into a single notification rather than displaying three in quick succession.

Place critical information after breaks

Position critical information after pauses Avoid placing your most important information immediately after other content. For example, after a user completes a form, the final confirmation with its call-to-action should appear only after they've had a moment to pause. Intentionally insert a blank screen, progress bar, or brief animation before displaying the most important button. This allows the attention system time to reset.

Movement not before important content

Animations capture attention. If important information appears immediately after an animation, the brain experiences an attentional blink. For example, avoid animating a 'Continue' button if an important disclaimer appears immediately afterward. Either omit the animation or wait 800ms before displaying the next critical content. This is particularly important for loading states that precede critical decisions.
