Visual design shapes first impressions. Angular, sharp forms are intended to signal competence and precision—that's the design logic. Yet users report discomfort with hard edges, while rounded forms are perceived as more pleasant. The question is: Why does the human brain prefer curves over corners? What neural mechanisms underlie this preference, and what evidence supports it?

Amygdala activation through threatening shapes

Moshe Bar and Maital Neta investigated neural responses to different shapes at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2006. Fourteen subjects viewed abstract objects in an fMRI scanner—some with sharp angles, others with rounded contours. Participants spontaneously rated how pleasant they found each object. The surprising result: angular objects activated the amygdala, the brain's fear center, significantly more strongly than rounded objects. Round objects, conversely, activated the ventral striatum, part of the reward system. The ratings correlated significantly with activation patterns: the stronger the amygdala response, the more negative the rating. The preference for roundness is therefore not a cultural convention but a neurobiological response. This effect occurred before subjects could consciously categorize the objects—within milliseconds.

Contours in Architectural Perception

In 2013, Oshin Vartanian and colleagues conducted a comprehensive study on how people perceive interior spaces. Two hundred participants rated photographs of rooms that were systematically varied by contour—from highly angular to highly rounded. Simultaneously, brain activity was measured using fMRI in 20 subjects. Rooms with curved contours were consistently rated as more beautiful (mean 5.8 versus 4.1 on a 7-point scale) and activated the anterior cingulate cortex, a brain region associated with emotional evaluation and reward. Angular rooms activated areas related to visual attention and potential threat detection. The surprising finding: even in neutral, empty rooms without identifiable sources of danger, sharp angles triggered this defensive response. This preference was independent of participants' architectural knowledge or cultural background.

The principle of preference for rounded forms states that curved and circular design elements enhance user trust and evoke positive emotions, while angular forms can unconsciously trigger defensive reactions. This evolutionarily rooted preference is particularly evident in visual communication and interface design, where rounded buttons, curved lines, and organic shapes improve user-friendliness. However, the effect is not universal—in contexts requiring professionalism, precision, or technical competence, clean geometric forms can be more advantageous. Additionally, the formal language should align with brand identity and target audience, as overly rounded design may be perceived as childish or lacking seriousness. Guidelines

Use rounded CTA buttons

Design important call-to-action buttons with rounded corners rather than sharp edges. A border-radius of 4-8px for small buttons and 8-16px for larger buttons enhances accessibility while maintaining a professional appearance. This subtle rounding unconsciously reduces psychological barriers and creates a more inviting feel. Avoid completely rectangular buttons for sensitive actions such as purchases or data submissions.

Soft shadows in product presentation

Use soft shadows instead of hard borders for product photos and cards. A subtle drop shadow (e.g., 0 2px 8px rgba(0,0,0,0.1)) creates depth without appearing harsh. Hard 1px borders can subtly trigger the threat response system. This is particularly important for emotionally sensitive products (health, family, finance) where establishing trust is critical.

Organic Icon Design

Use curved lines rather than sharp geometric angles when designing icons and illustrations. Rounded icons amplify positive emotions, making them ideal for affirmative actions like confirmations, success messages, and help features. For warnings or errors, intentionally angular shapes can underscore urgency—deploy this contrast strategically across different message types.

Rounded input fields

CX Guideline: Rounded Input Fields Design form fields with slightly rounded corners (3–6px border-radius). This reduces the perceived barrier to data entry. Completely rectangular fields appear more rigid and can unconsciously trigger resistance. In multi-step forms, consistent rounding reinforces the sense of a friendly, guided process rather than a bureaucratic questionnaire.
