Purchase decisions require attention—but attention is scarce. In a flood of information, many messages get lost. The question is: Which signals penetrate the attention barrier even when we're distracted? What makes messages impossible to ignore—and what does the evidence tell us?

Moray's Dichotic Listening Experiment

In 1959, Neville Moray conducted a landmark experiment that scientifically demonstrated the cocktail party effect. He had students listen to two completely different texts simultaneously through headphones—one in each ear. Their task was to follow only the right ear and ignore everything else. Then a voice in the ignored left channel suddenly whispered the participant's name. Although the students were fully concentrated on the other channel, approximately 33% noticed their own name in the ignored ear. Remarkably, they could not recall a single other piece of content from that channel.

Cherry's Cocktail Party Phenomenon

Colin Cherry discovered the phenomenon named after him in 1953 in his London laboratory. He played two different messages simultaneously to test subjects and asked them to follow only one and repeat it aloud. In the ignored channel, he switched the language from English to German, played it backwards, or replaced speech with beeping sounds. None of these changes were noticed. But as soon as the subject's own name was mentioned in the ignored channel, participants reflexively turned their attention to it. Our brain continuously scans all channels for self-relevant signals, even when fully concentrated on something else.

Wood & Cowan's Name Frequency

In 1995, Nigel Wood and Nelson Cowan set out to verify Moray's famous finding using more modern technology. They replicated the experiment with 80 students and more precise measurements, inserting participants' names a total of five times in the unattended channel. The results were sobering: only 35% noticed their name at all—and most detected it only the first or second time. After that, the recognition rate dropped drastically. Nevertheless, the finding was confirmed: one's own name has privileged access to attention, even if the effect is weaker than originally thought.

Principle

Which principle for Customer Experience Design can be derived from this? In a world saturated with messages, only self-relevant information breaks through the attention barrier. This principle holds particular value for customer experience, enabling brands to reach their target audience's awareness even amid severe information overload. However, the effect is highly context-dependent: while one's own name works almost universally, other self-relevant signals—such as profession or life situation—must precisely align with the recipient's current circumstances. Additionally, excessive or inappropriate personalization can feel intrusive and backfire. The following guidelines demonstrate how to apply this principle in practice.

Guidelines

Create relationship instead of anonymity

Reduce anonymity through personal connections: Use the recipient's name, reference known details about their situation, and assign specific contact persons rather than anonymous teams. Handwritten elements signal special effort and trigger reciprocity. Personal connections raise the psychological cost of dishonesty. The following examples illustrate this guideline:

  • Kleinanzeigen (eBay Kleinanzeigen): Profiles with names, ratings, response time. The visible identity reduces fraud because dishonesty is no longer anonymous.
  • Airbnb: Mutual reviews and profile photos. The personal connection between host and guest reduces damages and no-shows.

Personalized Extras

Personalize only with data you actually have, and make the basis transparent—use "based on your last purchase" instead of empty "specially for you" phrases. Authentic personalization builds trust; fake personalization destroys it. The following examples illustrate this guideline:

  • Starbucks: Baristas who know their regular customer's name and occasionally offer something extra ('The syrup is on the house today') create strong loyalty.
  • Hotels (Upgrade): A complimentary room upgrade upon arrival – when capacity allows. Costs the hotel little, but generates disproportionate gratitude and positive reviews.
