Trust emerges through convincing presentation. Detailed stories, concrete examples, and vivid descriptions appear credible. But does greater detail actually make a statement more probable? The key question is: Do people confuse vividness with probability, and how does this influence their judgments—and what does the evidence tell us?

The Linda Problem
Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman presented 88 Stanford University students in 1983 with the following scenario: "Linda is 31, single, outspoken, and very intelligent. She majored in philosophy. As a student, she was deeply concerned with issues of discrimination and social justice, and participated in anti-nuclear demonstrations." Participants were then asked to rate which was more probable: (A) Linda is a bank teller, or (B) Linda is a bank teller and active in the feminist movement. The surprising result: 85% chose option B, even though this is logically impossible—the probability of A+B can never exceed A alone. The detailed description made option B seem more "representative," despite being mathematically less probable. Even statistics students succumbed to the fallacy at a rate of 83%.
The Earthquake Experiment
Tversky and Kahneman tested this effect in 1983 using hypothetical future scenarios. They asked 115 participants to estimate the probability of various events occurring in the following year. Scenario A described "a massive flood somewhere in North America in which more than 1,000 people drown." Scenario B described "an earthquake in California that triggers a massive flood in which more than 1,000 people drown." Logically, Scenario A must be more probable than Scenario B—after all, B is simply a specific instance of A. Nevertheless, participants rated B as more probable on average. The concrete detail "earthquake in California" made the scenario more vivid and thus subjectively more plausible. On average, participants estimated the probability of the specific Scenario B to be 58% higher than that of the general Scenario A.
Principle
Which principle for Customer Experience Design can be derived from this? The principle of detailed credibility states that concrete, specific descriptions significantly increase the persuasiveness of messages—even when they reduce actual probability. In customer experience, this means customers are more likely to trust vivid, detail-rich product descriptions or specific use cases than abstract promises or statistical probabilities. This effect works particularly well for complex products or services where customers seek guidance, but can backfire with skeptical or analytically minded audiences. The key is balancing sufficient detail for credibility while avoiding exaggerations that could undermine trust. The following guidelines demonstrate how to implement this principle in practice.
Guidelines
Communicate concrete use cases
Don't describe abstractly that "Our tool helps with project management." Instead, paint a specific picture: "Software teams use our tool to complete sprint planning in 15 minutes instead of 45." The specificity increases credibility, even though the general benefit ("helps with project management") encompasses more use cases. Customers evaluate plausibility through imaginability, not logical scope.
Customer Stories with rich context
Don't frame testimonials as "Customer X is satisfied." Instead, paint a detailed picture: include the name, industry, specific initial situation, and concrete numbers. "Sarah Martinez, Marketing Director at a 50-person SaaS startup, reduced her reporting time from 8 to 2 hours per week" activates more mental models than "Our software saves time." The additional details enhance credibility—even though they technically narrow the target audience.
Constructing problem-solution narratives
Instead of presenting feature lists, construct a compelling narrative: 'Many e-commerce shops lose 30% of their customers at checkout because the payment options don't match their preferences. Our payment widget integrates 15 local payment methods into a single interface.' A specific problem description paired with a concrete solution appears more credible than simply stating 'We optimize conversion.' The conjunction effect makes the detailed story more believable, even though it actually promises less.
Design persona-specific landing pages
Create separate landing pages for different personas with specific details rather than a generic "one-size-fits-all" page. A page titled "E-Commerce CFOs Looking to Reduce Payment Fees by 20%" converts better than "Our Solution for Online Retailers"—even though the latter appeals to a broader audience. The specificity makes visitors think, "This is exactly for me," even when the product is identical.
