Information is learned in specific situations—during office onboarding, on a support call at your laptop, or during a first visit to a website. Intuitively, we assume that well-learned knowledge is retrievable anywhere, independent of context. Yet customers forget login credentials, overlook previously clarified information, and ask the same questions repeatedly—seemingly without reason. The question is: How strongly does the learning context influence later recall? Which factors determine this context dependency—and what does the evidence tell us?

The Diver Experiment

In 1975, Duncan Godden and Alan Baddeley conducted a remarkable experiment at the University of Stirling. Eighteen members of a diving club memorized lists of 40 unrelated words—either on land at the beach or 6 meters underwater. They were later tested in both environments. The striking result: divers who learned underwater and were tested underwater recalled an average of 13.5 words. Those same divers recalled only 8.6 words on land—40% fewer. The reverse held equally true: those who learned on land performed better on land. The context was not merely a backdrop but an integral part of memory itself.

The Two-Rooms Experiment

In 1978, Steven Smith, Arthur Glenberg, and Robert Bjork at the University of Michigan tested whether even subtle contextual differences influence memory. Fifty-four students learned a list of 80 words in a small, windowless room. The next day, they were tested either in the same room or in a completely different one—large, with windows, and different furniture and lighting. The group in the original room recalled an average of 18 words. The group in the new room recalled only 12 words—a 33% decline. The remarkable finding: a third group in the new room was asked to mentally visualize the original room before the test. They recalled 17 words—nearly as many as the group in the original room. Mental reconstruction of the context alone was sufficient as a memory aid.

Principle

Which principle for Customer Experience Design can be derived from this? The principle of context-dependent design states that information and assistance should be provided exactly where customers need them, as every context switch represents a potential memory barrier. Rather than forcing customers to switch between different areas, channels, or interfaces to retrieve relevant information, it should be directly available in the context of use. This principle works particularly well for complex decision-making processes and recurring interactions, but may be less relevant for very simple tasks or when attention should be deliberately directed elsewhere. The following guidelines demonstrate how this principle can be implemented in practice.

Embed contextual help

Embed Contextual Help Provide explanations, assistance, and instructions directly within the context of use, rather than separately in a help center. A tooltip at a form field is more effective than an FAQ article that customers must first locate. Tooltips, inline explanations, and context-sensitive hints enable learning and application within the same context—eliminating the memory barrier.

Use consistent interface patterns

Use the same UI patterns, labels, and visual structures across all touchpoints. If customers find a feature in a specific location on the website, it should appear in the same place in the app. Consistency reduces cognitive load—what has been learned once remains accessible. Inconsistent interfaces force customers to relearn navigation for each new context.

Conduct onboarding in the product context

Conduct onboarding within the product context Don't conduct onboarding in isolation—integrate it directly into the real product environment. Rather than using a separate tutorial, guide customers through their first steps in the actual interface, working with their own data in real usage scenarios. What users learn in an isolated onboarding mode is harder to recall when they later work in the product itself. Learning and applying knowledge in the same context maximizes transfer and retention.

Visual anchors across channels

Use recurring visual elements—colors, icons, and layouts—as contextual anchors across different channels. When customers encounter the same icons in support chat as on your website, their memories activate more easily. Visual consistency serves as a memory aid and reduces cognitive load during channel transitions. Each new visual context forces customers to relearn the interface.
