# The Information Gap Theory

George Loewenstein formulated the information gap theory in 1994. He demonstrated that curiosity arises when we become aware of what we don't know. The effect is strongest when we "almost" know something: one part is known, while another part remains missing.

The Trivia Questions Experiment

George Loewenstein conducted a series of experiments on Information Gap Theory at Carnegie Mellon University in 1994. Twenty-four students viewed a list of trivia questions from various categories. For each question, they indicated how confident they were that they knew the answer and how curious they were about it. The results revealed a surprising pattern: the highest curiosity emerged neither with complete ignorance nor with certainty, but in the middle. Questions where participants thought "I should actually know this" or "the answer is on the tip of my tongue" generated the most intense curiosity. Knowledge gaps accompanied by moderate prior knowledge are most motivating.

Curiosity in the Brain Scan

In 2009, Min Jeong Kang and her colleagues at Caltech used functional magnetic resonance imaging to make curiosity visible in the brain. Nineteen participants read trivia questions while in the scanner and rated their curiosity about each answer. The researchers measured their brain activity throughout. Then came the critical phase: participants could choose between receiving 25 cents or learning the answer. The results showed that higher self-rated curiosity correlated with greater activity in the nucleus accumbens and caudate nucleus—structures within the dopaminergic reward system. The surprising finding: high curiosity activated the same brain regions as material rewards. Twenty-one percent of participants forewent money to satisfy their curiosity, demonstrating that curiosity functions as a primary motivator.

Opening knowledge gaps in headlines

Your headline should provide enough information to establish relevance while leaving a critical question unanswered. Avoid clickbait that creates entirely artificial gaps.

Progressive Disclosure in Onboarding

Break down product information into bite-sized pieces and reveal only one element at a time. Don't explain everything in a single 10-minute video. Instead, introduce a new capability after each small success using prompts like "Did you know that...?" This approach keeps users curious about what's next. Important: Each step must deliver genuine value—otherwise, the experience feels artificially delayed and frustrating.

Pre-launch teaser with concrete details

Before product launches, don't simply announce 'Something new is coming soon.' Instead, provide concrete details that spark curiosity. For example: 'In 14 days, we're solving a problem that 67% of our customers have mentioned. It involves time savings—but not in the way you'd expect.' This approach creates tension through specificity combined with incompleteness. Avoid vague hints that lack substance.

Structure learning paths with intermediate questions

Deliberately embed questions into e-learning modules, tutorials, and knowledge content before revealing the answer. Rather than directly presenting facts, try: "Take a guess: What percentage of companies make this mistake?"—followed by a brief pause or interaction—then provide the resolution. This knowledge gap activates attention, prompting users to process the subsequent information more deeply.
