The Tapping Experiment
Elizabeth Newton conducted a now-famous experiment at Stanford University in 1990: She asked students to tap out well-known melodies like "Happy Birthday" or "Mary Had a Little Lamb" with their fingers on a table while others listened. The tappers were convinced that 50% of listeners would recognize the melodies. The result was sobering: only 2.5% actually identified the songs—everyone else heard nothing but meaningless tapping. The key insight: the tappers had the melody playing in their heads and couldn't imagine that others heard only rhythm without meaning. Knowledge creates blindness to ignorance.
Experts underestimate difficulty
In 1999, Pamela Hinds uncovered a paradoxical effect: She asked computer programmers at different experience levels to complete the same task—estimate how long a beginner would need to complete a programming assignment. The surprising result: The more experienced the programmer, the more they underestimated the time required. The top experts were the furthest off. The reason: They had forgotten how difficult it was at the beginning—their own arduous learning curve had become invisible to them. Yet it's often precisely these top experts who are deployed as trainers. Paradoxically, more knowledge can make for worse teachers.
Informed individuals cannot simulate ignorance
Colin Camerer, George Loewenstein, and Martin Weber demonstrated the power of the curse of knowledge in the stock market in 1989. They had experienced traders predict stock prices twice—once with insider information and once without. Even when explicitly asked to "think like someone without this information," the traders failed to do so. Their predictions remained biased by their knowledge. The brain cannot simply "switch off" what it has learned. Remarkably, the traders were aware of the bias and actively tried to avoid it. Nevertheless, they failed. Once you know something, you literally cannot imagine not knowing it anymore.

This phenomenon is especially relevant when designing customer journeys, product explanations, and onboarding processes, as companies often communicate from an inside-out perspective, overlooking the actual comprehension barriers their target audience faces. The principle applies universally across all forms of knowledge transfer but is particularly pronounced with complex products or services, where the gap between expert and novice knowledge is greatest. Because self-reflection alone cannot overcome this cognitive bias, structured testing with real users is the only reliable way to create understandable customer experiences. Test with outsiders, not with colleagues
Colleagues suffer from the same curse as you—they understand what you mean because they share the same background knowledge. Test your content with people unfamiliar with your product. Their confusion reveals exactly where you're "knocking" instead of "singing." The following examples illustrate this guideline:
- Amazon: Jeff Bezos' 'Press Release' method: Before developing any product, write a press release for customers, not internal stakeholders. If outsiders can't understand the press release, the product isn't ready to build.
