Product usage rarely begins from pure habit. New behaviors require an external prompt—as everyday observation shows. Yet many apps and services wait for users to become active on their own. The result: forgetting, postponement, and non-usage. The question is: Which external triggers reliably activate behavior, how should they be designed, and what evidence exists to support this?

The Fogg Behavior Model
BJ Fogg developed a foundational model for behavior triggering at Stanford University in 2009. He proposed that behavior occurs only when three elements are simultaneously present: motivation, ability, and trigger. In a series of experiments involving over 40,000 participants, he tested different trigger types for digital behaviors. The striking result: Even with high motivation and simple tasks, behavior failed to occur in 78% of cases when no external trigger was present. A simple visual or acoustic cue increased the execution rate to 61%. The trigger was not optional but a necessary condition. Fogg distinguished three types: spark triggers for unmotivated users, facilitator triggers for overwhelmed users, and signal triggers for motivated, capable users—each requiring different design approaches.
SMS reminders for medication adherence
In 2016, Quan Pham and colleagues conducted a meta-analysis of 16 randomized controlled trials involving 2,742 patients. The central question: Do SMS reminders improve medication adherence in chronic conditions? Patients with diabetes, hypertension, or HIV were assigned to either a control group or an SMS reminder group. The SMS messages arrived daily at the usual medication time with simple text such as "Time for your medication." The results were clear: The SMS group showed a 17.8 percentage point higher adherence rate. Among HIV patients, correct medication intake increased from 50% to 67%. The remarkable finding: The effect remained stable even after months—the external trigger did not create dependency but rather helped establish a routine.

Which principle for Customer Experience Design can be derived from this? Behavior requires external triggers – Don't wait for self-initiative. Instead, create deliberate trigger moments that activate users precisely when the context is optimal. External triggers systematically bridge the gap between good intentions and actual action by reducing cognitive load and suggesting the ideal moment to act. They are particularly effective for routine behaviors and situations where users are fundamentally motivated but might miss the optimal moment. However, triggers must be relevant and well-timed – overly frequent or poorly timed interruptions lead to reactance and will be ignored or blocked. The following guidelines show how to implement this principle in practice.

Optimize push notification timing
Use behavioral data to identify optimal trigger timing. Send reminders based on individual usage context rather than fixed schedules. For example, a banking reminder about month-end should arrive 2-3 days before payday, not automatically on the 1st of the month. Similarly, a fitness trigger works better in the evening than in the morning if the user historically exercises at that time. A/B test different time windows and personalize delivery based on success rates.
Guiding onboarding through staged triggers
Structure onboarding processes using strategically placed external triggers rather than relying on user initiative. Send an email with the next step within 2 hours of account creation. Provide an in-app prompt for the core function immediately after first login. If there's no activity after 24 hours, send a gentle reminder. Each trigger should lead to one concrete next step—not a list of options. Onboarding success depends less on feature quality than on the consistency of the trigger sequence.
Set contextual in-app triggers
Place calls-to-action as contextual triggers at the right moment rather than as static interface elements. When an e-commerce user visits the same product category three times, display a discount offer. When a SaaS user has never tried a feature that their usage profile suggests they need, present a tutorial prompt. Unlike permanent UI elements, these triggers appear, create impact, and disappear—generating a conscious decision moment instead of fading into interface noise.
Reactivation trigger after inactivity
Establish critical inactivity thresholds and configure automatic reactivation triggers at these key points. For example, set a 7-day threshold for productivity tools when users haven't logged in, or a 3-day threshold for health trackers when no entries have been recorded. These triggers should avoid accusatory language like "You forgot about us" and instead lead with value: "Your weekly summary is ready." Critical consideration: The trigger must provide a concrete entry point rather than simply requesting a return. "Here's your half-finished project" proves more effective than "Come back."
