Customer loyalty depends on knowledge—about products, applications, and benefits. This knowledge can either be presented to customers or developed by them independently. The key question is: Is self-generated knowledge retained in memory better than presented knowledge? How strong is this effect, and what does the evidence tell us?

Slamecka & Graf: Completing word pairs yourself

Norman Slamecka and Peter Graf conducted the groundbreaking experiment on the Generation Effect in 1978. They presented 60 psychology students with word pairs like 'hot-COLD'. Half the students saw complete pairs to memorize, while the other half saw only 'hot-C___' and had to generate the opposite themselves. Crucially, both groups learned identical words. In the subsequent test, those who generated the words remembered 28% more word pairs. The only difference: generating the word themselves rather than simply reading it nearly doubled memory performance. Even with obvious pairs like 'fast-slow', the effect was remarkably strong.

Handwritten vs. Laptop Notes

In 2014, Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer conducted a study with 327 students from Princeton and UCLA who watched identical TED Talks. Half took notes by hand, the other half on laptops. One week later, both groups were tested without access to their notes. The results were striking: the handwriting group scored 23% higher on comprehension questions. The reason: laptop users typed verbatim transcriptions, while those writing by hand were forced to summarize in their own words—they simply couldn't write fast enough to capture everything. This necessary reformulation led to deeper understanding, even though laptop users had recorded more words.

Guess first, then learn

Henry Roediger tested 180 college students in his famous 2006 "Unsuccessful Retrieval" experiment using trivia questions like "Which country has the most time zones?" Group A guessed first, then received the correct answer. Group B only read the complete question-answer pairs. One week later, the results were surprising: the guessing group remembered twice as many answers (64% vs. 32%), even though most of their original guesses had been wrong. The mere attempt to generate an answer created a stronger memory trace than passive reading.

Principle

Which principle for Customer Experience Design can be derived from this? Self-generated information is better remembered and processed more deeply because the active construction process creates richer neural connections than passive consumption. In customer experience, this means customers develop stronger attachment to products and services when they can configure, personalize, or shape them through their own decisions. This effect is particularly powerful with complex products or services where customers can contribute their preferences and knowledge—it is less relevant for standardized impulse purchases or when customers might feel overwhelmed. The following guidelines show how to implement this principle in practice.

Guidelines

Interactive calculators instead of static prices

Rather than displaying a price, allow customers to calculate it themselves. Tools like configurators, savings calculators, or ROI calculators make the number more memorable and credible because customers actively generate it. The following examples illustrate this guideline:

  • Tesla: The configurator allows customers to assemble their car themselves. The final price is not displayed – it is generated by the customer through their selections.
  • HubSpot: The 'Website Grader' allows users to analyze their own website. Users generate the results themselves – and remember them better.

Leave gaps instead of explaining everything

Advertising messages can deliberately leave gaps that the customer fills in mentally. 'Just do ___' is more memorable than a complete claim. Mental completion creates the Generation Effect. The following examples illustrate this guideline:

  • Apple: The claim 'Think different' is intentionally incomplete – Think different WHAT? The customer fills the gap with their own context.
  • IKEA: The instructions show only images, no text. The customer must interpret the steps themselves – and remembers better how the furniture is assembled.

Promote user-generated content

Enable customers to actively contribute to product design through their own content, configurations, or self-completed onboarding tasks rather than passive tutorials. Make their contributions permanently visible so the investment becomes non-transferable. The more tangible their customization, the stronger their emotional attachment. The following examples illustrate this guideline:

  • Spotify: Playlists, year in review ('Your Year in Music'), personalized recommendations based on history. None of it is transferable – switching means starting from scratch.
  • Notion: Complex workspaces, databases, templates. The more you set up, the more you invest – and the higher the switching costs.
