Value arises from quality—or so the assumption goes. But what if the customer becomes part of the creation process through self-assembly, self-configuration, or self-design? The question is: Does personal involvement change appreciation for the result? If so, how strong is this effect, and what evidence supports it?
Studies
The IKEA Box Experiment
Norton, Mochon, and Ariely from Harvard Business School conducted the famous IKEA experiment in 2012. They gave 52 students identical IKEA storage boxes: half assembled them themselves (a 5-minute task with instructions), while the other half received pre-assembled boxes. Each participant then stated the maximum they would pay. The self-assemblers bid an average of $0.78, while the others bid only $0.48—a 63% premium. Remember: these were identical boxes, and assembly took mere minutes. Yet this minimal personal effort made the product subjectively more valuable.
Origami and Value Overestimation
In a follow-up study, Norton and colleagues asked 38 participants to fold simple origami figures—frogs and cranes—following instructions. Subsequently, both the folders and uninvolved observers were asked to evaluate the figures' worth. The results were striking: The amateur folders bid $0.23 for their own creations—nearly as much as they bid for professional origami ($0.27). Uninvolved observers paid only $0.05 for the same amateur works. The builders overestimated the objective value of their work by a factor of five.
Success as a Prerequisite
In a clever variation, the researchers sabotaged the IKEA effect: For some participants, they deliberately removed a critical screw so the box assembly failed. These frustrated participants no longer showed an increased valuation effect—they bid just as little for their incomplete boxes as for pre-assembled ones. The only difference was the sense of achievement. Only those who successfully completed the task developed an emotional attachment to the product. The IKEA effect requires the "I did it!" feeling.

Which principle for Customer Experience Design can be derived from this? The IKEA Effect demonstrates that customers develop significantly stronger emotional attachment and higher appreciation for products or services when they actively participate in the creation process. However, this participation only works when the collaboration is meaningful and achievable—overly complex or frustrating tasks can produce the opposite effect. The principle is particularly effective for products with personal relevance or when the end result is perceived as an expression of one's identity. Companies can leverage this mechanism to build customer loyalty and increase willingness to pay, but must ensure that the required effort feels appropriate and the task appears feasible. The following guidelines show how to implement this principle in practice.
Guidelines
Promote user-generated content
Enable customers to actively contribute to product design through their own content, configurations, or self-completed onboarding tasks rather than passive tutorials. Make their contributions permanently visible so the investment becomes non-transferable. The more tangible their customization, the stronger their emotional attachment. The following examples illustrate this guideline:
- Spotify: Playlists, year in review ('Your Year in Music'), personalized recommendations based on history. None of it is transferable – switching means starting from scratch.
- Notion: Complex workspaces, databases, templates. The more you set up, the more you invest – and the higher the switching costs.
Error-tolerant interfaces
Design DIY elements to virtually guarantee success: provide clear instructions, intuitive steps, and easy undo functionality. Users should be able to experiment without their errors being recorded or evaluated. Failure undermines the IKEA effect. The following examples illustrate this guideline:
- Gmail: 'Recall email' after sending. The feature gives users the feeling that mistakes are not permanent and not visible – even if the email was already 'out there'.
- Figma: Unlimited undo, automatic versioning. Designers can experiment without fear of irreversible mistakes – no one sees the failed attempts.
