Context-aware notifications
Mehrotra and colleagues investigated the optimal timing for push notifications with 191 smartphone users in 2016. Using machine learning, they identified favorable moments—such as after completing a task or during breaks. Their model achieved 82.5% accuracy in predicting these favorable moments. The results showed that context-aware timing led to 2.5 times higher engagement rates and 60% fewer uninstalls.
Timing in a Business Context
Similar studies in a business context have shown that emails arriving in the first 10 minutes of the workday have 23% higher open rates than those arriving mid-day. The cognitive "resting state" between tasks provides the optimal window for effective communication.
Principle
Which principle for Customer Experience Design can be derived from this? The timing of a message often influences its impact more than its content—even the most relevant information will be rejected if it arrives at the wrong moment. For customer experience, this means companies must learn to recognize and respect their customers' natural attention cycles. This strategy is particularly effective at digital touchpoints, where user behavior is measurable and automated systems can identify the optimal moment for communication. However, context-aware timing requires both technical infrastructure and a deep understanding of customer habits—without these foundations, well-intentioned personalization can quickly be perceived as intrusive. Leveraging transition moments
The best moments for contact are transitions: after completing a task, when changing locations, at the start of the day. In these moments, the brain is open to new things. The following examples illustrate this guideline:
- Duolingo: Reminds in the evening at 8 PM – after dinner, before unwinding. A typical transition moment for many.
Analyze user behavior for timing
Analyze when your users are typically active and respond best. Individual timing beats uniform send times. The following examples illustrate this guideline:
- E-Mail-Marketing: Send-Time Optimization: Each recipient receives the email at 'their' optimal time – based on historical open times.
Limit frequency of notifications
Set a maximum for notifications per day/week. Too many contacts lead to users turning off notifications or uninstalling. Less is often more. The following examples illustrate this guideline:
- News Apps: Maximum 3 push notifications per day, regardless of how much happens. Prioritization instead of overwhelm.
