The 10,000-Image Experiment
In 1973, Lionel Standing conducted an experiment at Bishop's University in Canada to test the limits of visual memory. Five participants viewed 10,000 different photographs over several days—each for only 5 seconds. Afterward, they were shown pairs of images: one previously seen photo alongside a new one. The results were astonishing: participants correctly recognized 83% of the images—meaning they accurately identified 8,300 photos out of 10,000 after just a single, brief exposure. In contrast, a control group using words instead of images achieved only a 14% recognition rate. The findings suggest that visual memory is virtually unlimited in capacity.
The Dual Coding Study
In 1971, Allan Paivio tested his dual coding theory at the University of Western Ontario. He had 120 students learn 40 word pairs in three different formats: words only, pictures only, or word-picture combinations. After 24 hours, participants were asked to recall the pairs. Pure word pairs achieved 32% recall. Picture pairs reached 58%—nearly double. The strongest effect emerged with word-picture combinations: a 76% recall rate. The crucial finding was that pictures were not only remembered better but also retrieved faster. Average reaction time for pictures was 1.2 seconds, compared to 2.8 seconds for words. Paivio concluded that pictures are encoded both visually and verbally, leaving dual neural traces in memory.

The principle of "show, don't tell" leverages the superior processing capacity of our visual system: images are not only captured more quickly but also retained more effectively than pure text. In customer experience, this means that visual elements—from product images to infographics to videos—can dramatically enhance message transmission and brand recall. This approach is particularly effective for complex products or abstract services, where visuals help create understanding and build emotional connections. However, the principle only works optimally when the visual content is relevant, high-quality, and appropriately designed for the target audience—poorly chosen or low-quality images can actually be counterproductive. Replace text-heavy feature lists with visual representations of product benefits. Instead of stating "energy-efficient," visualize a decreasing electricity bill. Rather than claiming "durable," show the product withstanding extreme conditions. Visual evidence stays in memory six times longer than verbal claims. The representation must be concrete and specific—generic stock photos fail to leverage this effect.
Complex Processes as Diagrams
Complex processes, decision trees, and multi-stage procedures are more easily understood and remembered as visual flowcharts than as text. Use icons, arrows, and spatial arrangement to represent temporal sequences and logical relationships. Users can reproduce a well-designed diagram after viewing it once—they forget text descriptions within minutes.
Instructions with step-by-step photos
Product instructions, tutorials, and troubleshooting guides should photographically document each step. Text should serve only as a supplement, not as the primary information source. Users who receive visual instructions make 67% fewer errors and require 50% fewer support requests. Show actual execution rather than schematic drawings—realistic photos activate motor memory.
Display customer testimonials with faces
Testimonials accompanied by a photograph of the person are remembered significantly better and perceived as more credible than text-only quotes. The face establishes an emotional connection and makes the statement tangible. The combination of verbal content (the quote) and a visual anchor (the face) optimally leverages dual coding theory. Stock photos completely undermine this effect—only authentic images of real people work.
