Customers prefer to buy a complete set rather than individual items—or so the intuition goes. A "starter set" sounds attractive because it contains everything necessary. But what if the set isn't a real set at all, but merely individual products with a common label? The question is: Does the mere designation as a "set" increase purchase intent, even when no genuine bundling exists—and what evidence supports this?

The Gourville Restaurant Experiment

John Gourville conducted a series of experiments on Pseudo-Set-Framing at Harvard Business School in 2002. In one setup, he presented 178 restaurant patrons with two identical offers: Group A saw "appetizer, main course, dessert" listed as separate items totaling $42. Group B saw the same items presented as a "3-course menu" for $42—no price change, no bundling, only the label. The striking result: 58% of Group B ordered the menu, while only 23% of Group A ordered all three courses. The mere label "menu" doubled the purchase rate, even though the price and products were identical. A follow-up study revealed another insight: The menu group estimated the value 27% higher than the individual-item group.

The Tool Study by Kahn and Ratner

In 2005, Barbara Kahn and Rebecca Ratner at the University of Pennsylvania tested the pseudo-set effect using tools. They showed 240 DIY enthusiasts either five items listed individually—'hammer, saw, screwdriver, pliers, level'—or the same items labeled as a 'DIY basic kit.' The products were identical, as was the price: $89. The set group showed 41% higher purchase intent. The follow-up survey revealed the mechanism: the set group was significantly more likely to believe the tools were 'optimally coordinated' and contained 'everything necessary'—even though no such claims had been made. The effect intensified with more specific labeling: 'beginner set' outperformed simply 'set' because it more clearly signaled the intended user.

Principle

Which principle for Customer Experience Design can be derived from this? The Pseudo-Set-Framing principle demonstrates that simply labeling products as a "set" or "bundle" increases their perceived value and purchase intent, without any actual changes to the offer itself. This technique works particularly well with complementary products that customers would naturally use together, as well as in situations where completeness and cohesion are important purchase criteria. However, the set designation must be credible—with completely unrelated products, the effect can backfire and damage trust. The following guidelines show how to implement this principle in practice.

Guidelines

Name product groups as sets

Rather than listing individual products, linguistically group them into sets or packages. Terms like 'Starter Set', 'Basic Package', or 'Professional Bundle' automatically increase the perceived completeness and value. Ensure the composition follows a clear, logical structure. Specify exactly who the set is for or which use case it addresses.

Link set names with target audiences

The effect intensifies when the set name explicitly identifies a target audience or usage context. 'Starter Set', 'Professional Equipment', 'Family Package' – the more specific the label, the stronger the identification. Customers think: 'This was made exactly for me' and no longer need to determine for themselves what they require.

Use visual set representation

Support the linguistic set framing with visual grouping. Display products together in a single image, frame them collectively, or present them in a box. This visual cohesion reinforces the perception of a complete set. For digital offerings, use a shared product card rather than individual tiles.

Communicate set logic subtly

Simply labeling it as a set is often sufficient, but a brief rationale reinforces the effect. Phrases like "These three products form the foundation for..." or "Our experts recommend this combination for..." strengthen the appeal. The explanation doesn't need to be lengthy, but it reduces skepticism and legitimizes the grouping. For more complex products, show how the components work together.
