People fear embarrassing moments. A stain on their shirt, a slip of the tongue in a meeting—and immediately they feel that everyone is staring at them. This concern about being the center of negative attention profoundly influences behavior: from outfit choices to the decision to speak up in a discussion. The question is: Do people systematically overestimate how much others notice them—and what does the evidence show?

The Barry Manilow T-Shirt Experiment

Thomas Gilovich conducted a now-legendary experiment at Cornell University in 2000. Students entered a room where others were already seated, working on a task—wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with a large image of Barry Manilow, who was considered decidedly uncool at the time. After a few minutes, the T-shirt wearers were escorted out. They then estimated how many of the other students would remember the embarrassing shirt. The wearers guessed an average of 50%—in reality, only 23% remembered it. The participants overestimated others' attention by more than double. The striking part: what felt like a glaring spotlight to the wearers barely registered with the observers.

The Spot on the Face

Gilovich and Savitsky expanded the concept in 2000 with a more subtle test. They had 44 Cornell students receive what appeared to be an embarrassing black mark painted on their cheek—ostensibly as part of an experiment about first impressions. In reality, the mark was secretly removed shortly before the actual experiment, without the participants' knowledge. The subjects thus believed they were going through the experiment with a conspicuous blemish. Afterward, they were asked to estimate how many of the other participants would notice the mark on them first. They guessed 28%, even though the mark was no longer there. Even in the control group, where the mark remained visible, the wearers overestimated the attention by about 40%. People feel observed, even when the flaws exist only in their imagination.

Principle

Which principle for Customer Experience Design can be derived from this? The central principle is: take customer concerns seriously while gently putting them in perspective—because what customers perceive as embarrassing or problematic is usually barely noticed by others, if noticed at all. This insight is particularly valuable in situations where customers hesitate to seek help, ask questions, or report problems for fear of appearing incompetent or ignorant. However, the spotlight effect works as reassurance only when concerns are actually exaggerated—the principle does not apply to genuine social risks or visible problems. Companies can leverage this psychological tendency to lower barriers and create more open, trusting customer relationships. The following guidelines show how to implement this principle in practice.

Guidelines

Communicate explicitly: No question is stupid

Customers often hesitate to ask questions they perceive as "stupid" because they overestimate how negatively others will judge them. Actively communicate that all questions are welcome. Use phrases like "We get this question all the time" or intentionally include seemingly basic questions in your FAQs. This sends a clear signal: others share the same uncertainties, and no one is judging.

Normalize errors and mishaps

When customers make a mistake—whether it's incorrect input, an overlooked detail, or an operating error—treat it as completely normal. Never phrase error messages as accusations; frame them as assistance: "This happens easily" instead of "Invalid input." Also highlight common stumbling blocks in tutorials. This approach reduces perceived social embarrassment and lowers abandonment rates.

Offer anonymous channels for sensitive concerns

For sensitive topics—health, finances, or personal problems—customers tend to significantly overestimate how much others are observing or judging them. Provide anonymous or discreet contact channels: online forms instead of phone calls, chat instead of face-to-face conversations, and neutral packaging instead of prominent branding. This approach reduces anxiety about imagined social evaluation.

Leveraging Social Proof for Uncertainty

Show explicitly that many other customers share similar uncertainties. For example: "Many of our customers are initially uncertain about their choice" or "Most people don't know at first which model is right for them." This normalizes the customer's own uncertainty and reduces perceived embarrassment. The spotlight effect is mitigated through this normalization.

Enable private exploration

Enable customers to explore products without feeling observed. Self-service options, online configurators, virtual try-ons – all of these reduce the fear of being judged by others. The following examples illustrate this guideline:

  • Warby Parker: Home Try-On: Order 5 pairs of glasses to try on at home at your leisure. No awkward moments in the store, no salesperson watching. The private exploration lowers the barrier to entry.
  • IKEA: The showroom enables self-guided exploration without sales staff interaction. Customers can touch, test, and sit on furniture – without feeling observed or judged.

Normalize uncertainty

Communicate that uncertainty is normal: 'Most of our customers are initially unsure about which size fits.' This normalization reduces the fear of being perceived as unknowledgeable. The following examples illustrate this guideline:

  • Zalando: 'Order multiple sizes and return what doesn't fit.' The explicit permission for uncertainty normalizes the behavior and reduces the anxiety about making the 'wrong' purchase.
  • Headspace: 'It's normal for thoughts to wander – this happens to everyone.' The app normalizes 'failure' during meditation and reduces the fear of doing it wrong.

Error-tolerant interfaces

Design DIY elements to virtually guarantee success: provide clear instructions, intuitive steps, and easy undo functionality. Users should be able to experiment without their errors being recorded or evaluated. Failure undermines the IKEA effect. The following examples illustrate this guideline:

  • Gmail: 'Recall email' after sending. The feature gives users the feeling that mistakes are not permanent and not visible – even if the email was already 'out there'.
  • Figma: Unlimited undo, automatic versioning. Designers can experiment without fear of irreversible mistakes – no one sees the failed attempts.
